MMHLA's 2024 Year in Review
A monthly breakdown of how we drove progress in maternal mental health in 2024.
We championed the passage of three groundbreaking federal laws.
-
Into the Light for Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Act (2022)
This legislation expanded federal grants to states for maternal mental health programs and established the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.
-
Bringing Postpartum Depression out of the Shadows Act (2015)
This legislation provided federal grants to states to create maternal mental health programs that provide psychiatric consultation to front-line providers and patients, and connect affected women with resources.
-
The Maintaining our Obligation to Moms who Serve Act (2024)
This legislation, also known as The MOMS Act, will establish a program in the military health care system that will provide clinical and non-medical resources to prevent and treat maternal mental health conditions among military mothers.
We have secured $68.5 million in federal funding for maternal mental health programs.
-
$21 Million for the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline
Providing support to over 42,000 help-seekers since May 2022.
-
$47.5 Million for State Maternal Mental Health Programs
Providing training to over 1,800 healthcare providers in 2022.
We convened experts to address maternal mental health screening.
Screening Framework Development
We have developed a framework that offers guidance on when to provide education and screening during the perinatal period.
Addressing Screening Barriers
We are currently in the process of addressing barriers to screening, such as frontline provider education, insurance coverage, provider reimbursement, resources for impacted patients, and improvement of screening tools.
