What We Do
Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA) is a 501(c)3 nonpartisan nonprofit organization leading national efforts to improve maternal mental health in the United States by advocating for policies, building partnerships, and curating information
We work in three strategic areas to fulfill our mission and vision.
Advocating for Change
We advocate for national policies that improve maternal mental health with a focus on access for all.
Since our founding, we have championed the passage of two federal laws and have helped secure millions in federal funding to create state maternal mental health programs and to establish the first National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.
A key part of our advocacy work is hosting annual Congressional Briefings and Advocacy Days and authoring letters to Congress in order to educate elected officials and their staffs, federal policymakers, and advocates about people’s lived experience with maternal mental health and the policy solutions that could help support parents and families.
Building Partnerships
We convene experts from across sectors, such as our organizational partners and funders and through our Corporate and Technology Councils — who work with us to improve maternal mental health.
We are leading a multi-year collaborative effort through the Perinatal Mental Health Education & Screening Project to ensure that all pregnant and postpartum people are educated about and screened for maternal mental health conditions and connected with resources for recovery.
In addition to our specialized programs, we host webinars and other learning opportunities to connect with experts and deliver critical information to those in the maternal mental health field.
