Summit on Prevention Programs
Background
The Summit on Prevention Programs was a 2-hour virtual event hosted on May 23, 2022 with a plenary session followed by optional breakout sessions.
The goal of this event was to bring together representatives of evidence-based programs designed to prevent and mitigate perinatal mental health disorders, along with representatives from government agencies, national organizations, and others who could benefit from learning about and implementing these programs.
Audience
Organizations and individuals who were interested in implementing these programs, such as government agencies and bureaus from HHS (ACF, CMS, HRSA, SAMHSA); national organizations involved in maternal-child health, mental health, birth equity, etc.; and national, state, and local government agencies and departments.
Programs
Three evidence-based protocols, two of which have been endorsed by the United States Preventive Services Task Force, have proved effective in preventing perinatal mental health conditions by teaching parents how to reduce stress, improve communication, and build social support. These programs focus primarily on parents with limited resources or support systems and are typically available via community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, or home visiting programs.
